Born from a love of the outdoors, my work explores how time and perception affect my memories through wood burning and illustration. With a focus on places I've been and landscapes from impactful memories, I begin my process with illustrations pulled from en plein air sketches, original photography, and memory. While transferring the illustration to wood burning, I emphasize the slow pace and focus given to these drawn memories. Burning them permanently into wood awards them a stable place in my mind, bringing small details since forgotten to light. The extended amount of time demanded by this medium removes me from the present and puts me somewhere between a memory and a dream state, with the freedom to look around.
This project is set to last a year, completing 1 new piece a month. Having a time based completion system drives me to remain consistent and will result in a 12 piece body of work. I am challenging the medium by expanding in scale, progressively growing the size of pieces as the timeline continues. I hope to use raw and local wood. Additionally, I am experimenting with hanging systems and presentation.
During this year long project, I have also incorporated teaching this craft in a public envrionment with a range of skill and experience in order to better understand the craft myself by instructing new perspectives.
